Macy's Christmas Catalog - 1982

Have you started your holiday shopping yet? There are only 44 shopping days until Christmas, you know. Don't want to think about right now? Neither do I. Instead, enjoy these choice offerings from the Macy's 1982 Christmas catalog with me.

Adolfo's natural Canadian Lynx fur coat adorned the cover. "Surround her in its opulence - and keep her forever beholden." Say what??? I don't think so! Coat sold for a mere $12,000 in 1982 (about $26,500 in today's dollar). He wears a Bill Blass tuxedo.

Cotton velveteen full skirted dress by Norma Kamali. Sold for $196 in 1982 (about $433 in today's dollar). The lace collar sold separately for $28 (about $62 in today's dollar).

Unfortunately, a page is ripped out of my catalog so I can't tell you who this tuxedo was designed by, but check out that boxy jacket and tapered pants. Weren't we something?

Bill Tice polyester lounging pajamas with an oriental motif. Sold for $125 in 1982 (about $276 in today's dollar).

For the younger set, romantic Gunne Sax separates in burgundy velvet or taffeta.

And, honey, if you didn't have at least one Izod polo shirt in your closet, you were not a proper fashionista! Popped collar required. Cardigan thrown over the shoulders optional.

I was 11 in 1982 and coveted Gunne Sax dresses.

I also remember Izods being worn two at a time with both collars popped.

I had a crimson velvet Gunne Sax dress that was my Christmas Party staple. Oh and Sam and LIbby ballet slippers

Wow, that lynx coat is just magnificent! I remember a Bloomingsdale catalog from late 90s (98 perhaps?) that featured a gorgeous model wearing a crystal fox jacket. The crystal fox had such a dramatic range of colours, from yellow to brown, from red to black...

This is the allure of the Christmas shopping season. Not everyone can afford a lynx or crystal fox fur coat, but a pair of fox trimmed cashmere gloves at $99, or a Russian style fur hat at $250 is within the reach of the many. These smaller and cheaper pieces allow us all a little glamour in our lives and life goes on...

I was in my Aunts Wedding in 1982 at 7 years old, I wore peach with a hugh lace collar and my brother and cousin wore brown velvet Eton suits made by my mother - I wonder if they were inspired by this trend??

Remember when Macy's was glamorous?

Oy, I did the popped-collar polo shirt thing for one season in about 1983. They weren't Izod's though...couldn't afford those (was supporting a grad student soon-to-be-ex-husband at the time).

I remember those "granny dresses." What were we thinking????

I wasn't born in 1982... too bad I missed out on one hell of a fur coat.

Oops! The Bloomingsdale catalog I was referring to was not in 90s but the year 2000! Here it is:

I wish I could copy the above Bloomingdale's catalog link, but this site won't allow me.
