Couture Allure Giveaway #7

Today's giveaway is for a copy of the book "1000 Hats" by Norma Shephard. The book is in brand new condition and lists for $39.95. I bought it for my research bookshelf, but I've never used it.

Before you get all excited, I must tell you that as a research tool, this book is one of the worst I've ever purchased. The dating provided for the hats shown is often very inaccurate and way off the mark. Shephard identifies several 1960s cloche hats as 1920s flapper hats, and there are some 1950s hats identified as Edwardian. For a supposed expert, her research is very poor. In addition, the prices given as values are extremely overblown.

However, if you like to look at pretty hats, there are pictures of over 1200 of them in the 254 pages of this book. There is an extensive glossary with hat styles and terms, and there is a short history of hat making.

How do you enter to win? Simple! Visit my website, www.coutureallure.com and pick your favorite item for sale. Leave a comment here with a link to that item and you're entered! OR become a new fan of Couture Allure on Facebook, come back here and leave a comment that you've done so. Do both, and you're entered twice! The winner will be drawn on Friday, February 12th. Please note: If your Blogger profile does not include your email address, please leave it in your comment so I have a way to contact you. The book will be shipped via Media Mail in the U.S. and First Class International Mail outside the U.S. It is important to note - if you live outside the U.S. or Canada, I will need to ask you to pay the postage costs, which could be as much as $35.00 depending upon where in the world you live.

Your selection is amazing...It was hard to choose just one favorite. I love the Sue Wong beaded silk
evening gown
and also fanned your FB page.

If you haven't already seen the movie 'The Young Victoria' I encourage you to go see it. The costumes and the hats are exquisite.

This coat practically makes me cry tears of joy and I'd gladly spend part of my tax refund on it if the bust wasn't so small while mine was so big!

And I'm also your newest fan on facebook!

My fav right now is Vintage 50s Black Halter Full Skirt Party Dress Small bust 36".

Too bad about the bad research on the book. I am excited about the pictures though and am always looking for ideas to stir my creativity, so the book still has merit. Thanks for the giveaway!

Jody, thanks for a fair and honest review of this book. It's so much harder to write about a bad book than a good one! Not coincidentally, on my blog I just had to give bad marks to another book from this same publishing company. I have to see a book from them before I'll buy from now on!

Oh, hats! My favorite thing. I was a woozy admirer when Leko still had her shop near me. I realized I'd been preparing for a millinery career my whole life as I had boxes of silk and velvet flowers, beautiful pieces of ribbon, scraps of antique lace - all of which were unfortunately stolen from a storage unit. I'm not sure I'd get much done for a few weeks if I had this book, but I'd be happy.

My favorite dress (and the one for which I am saving my pennies) is the beautiful Sarmi halter evening gown with the broad, white ribbon straps crossing the bare back and the bow that glows against the azure blue silk chiffon skirt. Perfection.

Definitely the 1960s Oscar De La Renta striped maxi dress. Although I usually do not like blue, this one struck me. I do truly love hats, though. Thanks!
