If you get the J. Peterman catalog, then you know they sell copies of classic designs. What you may not have known is that they copy vintage pieces almost line for line, including the fabric, and produce them in modern sizes. This can be great for us modern gals that don't fit well in vintage sizes. Case in point: J. Peterman has the
50s style cotton sarong dress shown above in their current summer catalog. They bought the original from
Couture Allure!

Here is the original 1950s yellow cotton sarong dress I sold to them last fall.

They've done a beautiful job of reproducing it, don't you think?

And, while I just had the dress in one size, you can now get a faithful copy of it in your size.

They even reproduced the pale yellow fabric with the print of seaweed and fishies!

Of course, what they couldn't reproduce was the original label from Mei Ling Fashions. Theirs will say J. Peterman. And it will be made with modern sewing techniques and a nylon zipper. If you like 50s sarong dresses, but can't fit into a 50s size, consider this copy by J. Peterman. The $149 price is certainly affordable!

Those of us who love the sarong dresses already know that the real ones go for upwards of $300 regularly, so if their version is faithful, it'd be well worth it!
Great info!
I'd love to see one in person!
Wow, how cool is that?? LOVE the print on the original dress.
Why have I never heard of J Peterman before?! I've just been letting out little gasps of love at their online catalogue. It's still pretty pricey for us Brits though with our weak pound.
love that sarong, the colors are awesome, very informative, you always have besutiful vintage pieces
Such a beautiful dress, and an adorable print! Nice it gets to live on and be worn again.
Jody, What a great story that J. Peterman purchased the dress and copied it from you. His summer catalog has the most dreamy collection I've ever seen; and is salvation for those like moi you can rarely find a lovely 50's, 40's or 30's dress in our size. I even wrote Mr. Peterman a thank you note this week because I was so overwhelmed at the gorgeous dresses he offers.
That is so interesting. I've often wondered how faithful their copies are, and now I know!
Has anyone purchased the J. Peterman copy of this dress? I am curious to see how it looks not as a drawing.
