Greta Plattry Swimsuit - 1955

Love, love, love!  This little feature from Harper's Bazaar not only shows us the swimsuit, but gives a flat image of the terrific fabric it's made of.  The fabric is an Everglaze cotton by Tarnmoor and features various ships in yellow on white.  Greta Plattry used the fabric to make the adorable two piece swimsuit in 1955.  She paired it with a yellow corduroy beach jacket.  Suit sold for $12 and jacket for $17 in 1955 (about $106 and $150 in today's dollar.)

Dan River Stripes - 1948

If you are buried under ice and snow, this image should warm you up a bit.  From 1948, Ciro's swim suit and companion dress, both made from Dan River Dantone combed cotton in a woven stripe.  All pieces came in black stripes on yellow, pink or aqua.  Look how perfectly those stripes are matched at the center front of the skirt!

Read more about Dan River here.  It's a sad story.

Photo from a full page ad that appeared in Mademoiselle, 1948.

Roxanne Swimsuit - 1964

Who says you need a teeny bikini or a skin tight swimsuit to be sexy?  The blouson bodice was all the rage in 1964.  Here, Roxanne Swimsuits translates that fashion trend into a smoldering hot swimsuit in nylon.  That blouson outer layer floats over a fitted lining and the sash tie adds just the right touch.

Carolyn Schnurer Swimsuit, 1952

I love the composition of this photo.  Louise Dahl-Wolfe was a genius.  Carolyn Schnurer designed this swimsuit for her 1952 collection.  The textile mimics the texture in the antique Japanese woven bamboo box.

Rudi Gernreich Swimsuit, 1968

Not all of Rudi Gernreich's swimsuits were topless.  This one from the summer of 1968 is black wool knit with clear vinyl at the hips.  The neckline is high in the front, but low in the back.  Sold for $40 in 1968 (about $268 in today's dollar, but likely worth a whole heckuva lot more as a collectible or museum piece.....if you can find one.)

Cole of California Swimsuit - 1955

In the spring of 1955, Cole of California introduced a new brilliant blue color they called Cole Blue.  The suit was made from a new fabric called Warshfast Laton that would not fade through a summer in salt water, chlorine pools and sun.  This suit was designed by Margit Fellegi.  That draping around the waist makes the model look even tinier than she is.  And that wing on one bust serves to balance the draping on the opposite side.  This suit probably came with removable shoulder straps, but I think it looks great without them.  Don't you?

Tina Leser Swimsuit - 1945

A simple black swimsuit will always turn heads and this one by Tina Leser from 1945 is no exception.  But how do you stand out from the crowd?  Why not wear a pretty charm bracelet around your upper arm?  I like that idea!

Red Swimsuit - 1970

Love, love, love this little red swimsuit.  Fun cut-outs make this a one-piece trying to be two.  And the brass zipper with a large ring pull is pretty darn sexy.  Suit by Silhouette, 1970.

Novelty Print Swimsuit - 1954

Photo by Tom Palumbo for Harper's Bazaaar
This morning I was doing my usual thing, flipping through one of my vintage magazines looking for inspiration to post for you here.  And there it was....bam!  This image nearly knocked me out of my chair!  Do you see it?  From 1954, this Rose Marie Reid swimsuit is made from black cotton printed with giant red, white and blue safety pins!  Look again.....do you see it?  The matching cotton terry beach towel with the same print enlarged on white terry!  This will make me smile all day long.  Swimsuit sold in 1954 for $12 (about $102 in today's dollar.)  Beach towel sold in 1954 for $4 (about $34 in today's dollar.)

Dior Swimsuit - 1965

Photo by Helmut Newton for Vogue UK
It's Summer 1965. Christian Dior uses the latest fad of wild and crazy prints for this terrycloth bikini and silk chiffon coverup for his Boutique label.  I wish the colors were a bit brighter, but it's gorgeous all the same.  Do you suppose one of these bikinis is hiding in a drawer or an attic somewhere in the world just waiting for someone to find it and appreciate it?  I hope so.

Weekend Eye Candy - Charmis Swimsuit, 1953

I posted this photo on the Couture Allure Facebook Fan page this past week and it got such a positive reaction, I wanted to share it with those of you who may not have seen it. This has got to be one of the sexiest swimsuits I have ever seen. French, of course. Probably heavily boned or wired at the top. And it probably came with removable straps. Black wool and Lastex maillot by Charmis.

Tina Leser Beach Ensemble, 1945

Tina Leser was well known for her use of exotic fabrics and style influences from around the world. During the WWII years, however, her travels were limited and so were her fabric choices. Leser was still able to find inspiration, though, and here she uses simple white jersey for an exotic beach look. The two piece swimsuit has a twisted bandeaux top and came with a long wrap-around skirt. The set sold for $42 in 1945 (about $509 in today's dollar.)

More swimsuits from 1964. By the way, all the swimsuits from yesterday and today were modeled by Suzy Parker. Parker was 33 years old in these photos, which were taken near the end of her modeling career. Doesn't she look great?

Weekend Eye Candy - Claire McCardell Swimsuit

Claire McCardell swimsuitVogue 1953: A Claire McCardell swimsuit in wool jersey. The bodice is styled like a McCardell dress with deep cut sleeves, gilt hooks and eyes, and cord belt.

This swimsuit showed up on EBay this week, and sold for a nice price. The seller didn't know what she had, but the bidders sure did!
