Final Day to Enter!

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO ENTERED!

Today is the final day to enter to win one of 10 copies of the best book about vintage fashion offered to my readers by The Smithsonian Channel and L.A. Frock Stars.  And don't forget to watch the show tonight!

Get ready to go behind the seams of Hollywood's hottest vintage outfit. Don’t miss the all-new Smithsonian Channel series L.A. Frock Stars featuring Doris Raymond and her team of vintage virtuosos as they give fine vintage frocks a second chance to shine at today’s biggest red-carpet events. L.A. Frock Stars premieres this Thursday at 8pm ET & PT / 7pm CT on Smithsonian Channel. Go to smithsonianchannel dot com to find the channel on your TV.

I am so excited!  Couture Allure has been asked to partner with the Smithsonian Channel's new reality show, "L.A. Frock Stars" and give you the opportunity to win one of 10 copies of "Fashion: The Definitive History of Costume and Style!"

First, let's talk about the show.  I have watched the first episode of "L.A. Frock Stars", which goes behind the scenes at Doris Raymond's well known vintage store, The Way We Wore in Los Angeles.  May I just say, I am very impressed!   The show has done a fabulous job of respecting the clothing and honoring the vintage industry.  You'll get to see some incredible vintage clothing, and who doesn't want to see Dita Von Teese try on 1950s Christian Dior Haute Couture?  You can watch the first episode of "L.A. Frock Stars" online at the show's website, or if you get On Demand programming as part of your cable package, you can watch it now on your TV.

Second, let's talk about the book.  I recommended "Fashion: The Definitive History of Costume and Style" to you back in January after I read it.  This is an incredible 480 page book filled with full color photos of actual garments and a detailed history of costume and fashion from ancient Egypt right on through the 1990s.  Believe me, you WANT this book!  And I'm giving away 10 copies courtesy of The Smithsonian Channel and "L.A. Frock Stars!"

How do you enter to win?  Simply head over to the "L.A. Frock Stars" website and have a look around.  Then come on back here and leave a comment about a favorite moment in the first episode or which episode you are looking forward to seeing most or which dress you want.  If your email address is not attached to your Blogger profile, please put it in your comment so I can contact you on Friday. 10 winners will be selected at random and announced on Friday, March 8.  Please note that this giveaway is only available to those of you in the US and Canada.  Enjoy the show and good luck!

Product Review and Giveaway! Vermont Country Store Herbal Shampoo

GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED

Last week I posted about my memories of the original Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo from the 70s. It was such a great product but the original is no longer made. I had found a comparable shampoo at Vermont Country Store. They specialize in hard-to-find products and have a wonderful selection from the practical to the quirky.

After that post went live, I was contacted by Vermont Country Store and they sent me several bottles of the shampoo so I could review it and give some away to my readers!

I'm not a person who loves flowery scents. My perfume of choice is K.L., which is a scent that combines amber, cloves, orange, and cinnamon in the most wonderful heady fragrance. K.L. was discontinued long ago, and I hoard the few bottles I have left. My potpourri, sachet, and incense choices always lean toward woodsy, spicy scents like cedar, bergamot, and eucalyptus. That's why I have such fond memories of the original Herbal Essence shampoo.

I've used the Vermont Country Store Herbal Shampoo for several days now, and while it is not exactly like the the original Clairol Herbal Essence, it is as close to any current product on the market that I have found. The scent of the Vermont Country Store shampoo has more of a "soapy" undertone and lacks what I remember as the pine fragrance of the original, but it does have a wonderful herbal and spicy scent that lingers for several hours after I have shampooed. And it's no wonder, as the list of ingredients includes extracts of thyme, marjoram, sage, basil, ginseng, lavender, green tea, ginko, coneflower, and marigold. I love it and I hope you will too!

GIVEAWAY NOW CLOSED

Vermont Country Store has generously provided five 16 oz. bottles of their Country Herbal Shampoo for me to give away to you, my dear readers. How do you win?

1. Hop on over to Vermont Country Store's website and take a look around. I especially love their Brands From The Past section.
2.. Post a comment telling us about your favorite find (excluding the Herbal Shampoo) from Vermont Country Store here, and you're entered to win!
3. Please include a valid email address in your comment so I can contact you. Comments without a valid email address will be disqualified.

I'll draw 5 winners next Monday, September 20. Good luck!

UPDATE:  Vermont Country Store has discontinued this product.

This is a large coffee-table size book with 320 pages of incredible home decorating ideas filled with mid-century modern furniture. The dust jacket has some tears and curling at the edges, but otherwise, the book is in excellent condition.

I know, I know - it's not clothes. But if you love vintage fashion, I have an inkling that you'll love this book too. I mean, a leopard rug? Come on - you know you love it.

Giveaway #7 Winner!

The winner of the book "1000 Hats" is Sunshine! Congratulations, Sunshine. I'll be in touch via e-mail so I can ship your book.

Couture Allure Giveaway #7

Today's giveaway is for a copy of the book "1000 Hats" by Norma Shephard. The book is in brand new condition and lists for $39.95. I bought it for my research bookshelf, but I've never used it.

Before you get all excited, I must tell you that as a research tool, this book is one of the worst I've ever purchased. The dating provided for the hats shown is often very inaccurate and way off the mark. Shephard identifies several 1960s cloche hats as 1920s flapper hats, and there are some 1950s hats identified as Edwardian. For a supposed expert, her research is very poor. In addition, the prices given as values are extremely overblown.

However, if you like to look at pretty hats, there are pictures of over 1200 of them in the 254 pages of this book. There is an extensive glossary with hat styles and terms, and there is a short history of hat making.

How do you enter to win? Simple! Visit my website, www.coutureallure.com and pick your favorite item for sale. Leave a comment here with a link to that item and you're entered! OR become a new fan of Couture Allure on Facebook, come back here and leave a comment that you've done so. Do both, and you're entered twice! The winner will be drawn on Friday, February 12th. Please note: If your Blogger profile does not include your email address, please leave it in your comment so I have a way to contact you. The book will be shipped via Media Mail in the U.S. and First Class International Mail outside the U.S. It is important to note - if you live outside the U.S. or Canada, I will need to ask you to pay the postage costs, which could be as much as $35.00 depending upon where in the world you live.
