Remember the Original Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo?

Wow, what a trip down memory lane! This 1972 ad for Clairol Herbal Essence Shampoo brings me way back. When I was in high school and working at Woolworth's, I loved this shampoo so much, I bought it with my own money and did not share it with my 4 sisters. The pine woods scent was unlike anything else on the market. I had long straight hair at the time and would get wiffs of the scent almost all day. As Clairol said, it was "clean and fresh and fragrant with the cool, green essence of mysterious herbs and enchanted flowers".

Clairol discontinued this shampoo long ago. Their new line of Herbal Essences shampoos are nothing like this original. Believe me, I've tried. When I came across this ad today, I did a search for it, and I am not alone in wishing Clairol would revive the original. But I did find this:

Vermont Country Store has come out with what appears to be a great alternative. According to the overwhelmingly positive customer reviews, this product mimics the original scent to a T. I've not tried it yet, but I'll be sure to let you know my opinion when I fill up my shopping cart and get my order!

UPDATE #2:  Vermont Country Store has discontinued their version of this shampoo.  Check the comments for other suggestions!

That was my favorite in high school too. Afterwards I used Flex shampoo, and it smelled so good. I had people comment on my "perfume" all day long.

Miss Rayne,
Those are the new formulations that are also available in the US. They just don't compare to the original.

can this be for sale on international markets including the middle east? We don't like the formula which is made in Saudi Arabia it's so fake & makes the hair look dead. We want the original formula.

Could this shapoo be sold in international markets including the middle east? We currently have herbal essences which is made is Saudi arabia with their formula & doesn't make the hair volumised; your hair looks dead & flat. I liked the original Herbal herbal essences better.

I absolutely loved this shampoo with its herbally woodsy fragrance. Come on Clairol and do a retro promo for all us baby boomers! The new stuff just doesn't measure up to the "real"thing!

I'm with you re original Herbal Essence shampoo. I also "pine" for original Clairol Condition. Remember that jar of amazing, thick, real conditioner?

Clairol claims there's not enough consumer interest in bringing the original 1970's herbal essence product back. There's not a demand for it, declined consumer interest. Please direct your interest in resurrecting this product directly to Clairol www herbalessences.com/en-US/contact-us or on facebook. your voices need to be heard.

I actually purchased the one from the Vermont Country Store and am returning it, since it's not even close to the scent I remember. I was willing to spend the outrageous price of 14.95 for it, but what a total ripoff!! Anyhow, I may just resort to getting Fekkai's green shampoo (you can find it at Ulta) and it's pricey, but the scent is really close to what I remember.

Like many...I've been on a search for a good reproduction...I have found two, but one of them I can no longer find. The local stores have small sections that cater to the Hispanic population. I found both of the shampoos in these sections. The one I've found to be the best is by a company called Vanart. "herbal essence shampoo for all hair types" "shine and silkness" it's only like 4.95 for a 32 ounce bottle, has the same great green color and luxurious thick texture...and to my nose..it smell just like the original by Clairol. I have found it at sweet bay grocery stores and Walmart...if you find it would be nice to know what you think.

Guess what everyone?!!!!

I made an incredible discovery a few months ago!

SOFTSOAP makes a body wash that you can buy at most 99 cent stores that is called Fresh Aloe Fragrance, and it smells EXACTLY like the original Herbal Essence Shampoo! I bought dozens.

It's a 7.5 fl oz bottle, and the UPC is 07418228071. My eyes roll back into my head every time I use it!

This comment may be a year late but...

I remember the scent of this shampoo so fondly from my early teen years - actually loved the scent of the accompanying body powder that Clairol sold best of all. I actually came across an old container of the powder some 11 years ago when I was helping my parents clear out their basement and the scent took me back to (great) memories of the early 70's in one big rush but, in a fit of housecleaning, I threw out the container (what the heck was I thinking?)

I recently bought a bottle of shampoo at a Walmart in the Long Island, NY area called Mirta de Perales ("herbal fresh" scent)...it's the same fragrance and the same emerald green shampoo that I remember from the early 70's...loved that stuff and NEVER thought I would find it again. Best of all, it was only around $5 or $6 dollars for an 8 oz. bottle.

p.s. Don't bother buying the "herbalessence" version from online website The Vermont Country Store...I made that mistake previously and it smells nothing like the original.

Now if only I could find the original fruits-scented "Skinny Dip" solid cologne compact from 1974, a similar product idea to the Coty Sweet Earth compacts from that same era....sigh.

I, too, wish I could find the Skinny Dip Fruit Dip solid cologne compact from 1974. I had the bluish-green one. I know there was an orangey-yellow one, too. I think they had the same scents, though. I remember there was tangerine, lemon, strawberry, and melon, I think. I have smelled a few things that were close, but no cigar.

Hey! I totally miss it too- There is a petition online that I am now keeping track of- (can't find the person who started it-) So far I've figured out that they could make close to $500,000 gross annual just from the interest I've seen~ Please SIGN the petition! Here's the link:

Go Herbal Essence!!!!

I just signed the petition! Everyone please go & sign, too. This is the best shampoo ever, nothing compares to the way it made your hair smell so good for so long! Bring it back! The current Herbal Essence shampoos are not even close! I don't use them!

I tried to find it at the site you suggested and even they don't carry that copy-cat version! Is there no hope??

I just messaged Clairol on Facebook telling them I believe they are missing out on a HUGE market sector and I requested they bring this product back. Perhaps Clairol would consider re-creating this wonderful shampoo if everyone who posted on this site did the same thing. Please take a moment to message Clairol on Facebook. There's strength in numbers!

Where can I get this country story shampoo? How about the conditioners that went with it?

The Vermont Country Store lists the herbal shampoo as unavailable, but upon speaking to a real person who checked by item number, I was informed that it is a discontinued item. I loved the original Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo and creme rinse. I had long straight hair back in the 70's and people who sat behind me in class rarely failed to remark on the scent. I miss it terribly.

It is great to read these comments..I am actually a perfumer for the original fragrance house that created this fragrance and have worked on this formulation.....I love it so much because I was a young teenager when it came out and to have had the luck and honor to work on it...I guess you could say I inherited it...was a wonderful experience for me. I wish it would get relaunched...even as an exclusive anniversary limited edition...I just feel it would do well.

virginia gomez said...

AKBABOY...OH my gosh are you joking? So what was the fragrance made up of? So far I remember smelling pine lemongrass and honeysuckle and some woodsy scent..I will have to put it together myself because P&G doesnt want to bring back the original(70's) conditioner and shampoo...

I have been trying to make a perfume blend to mimic the original and cannot seem to get it right. I think there was rosemary, pine and lavender maybe mint? but I am not getting anything close.
