Weekend Eye Candy - Alix, 1935

A backless black crepe evening gown by Alix Barton, 1935.  Alix is better known as Mme. Gres today.  I love how the drapey sleeves accent that open back.

Weekend Eye Candy - Mme. Gres, 1953

How do you take an ordinary striped dress and make it more interesting?  First, have it designed by a master draper like Mme. Gres.  Then make a shelf bust that curves up into tucked cap sleeves.  Finally, in a bit of whimsy, fill the shelf bust with silk flowers.  J'adore!

Weekend Eye Candy - Mme. Gres, 1962

Our final June bride for this year wears a wedding gown by Mme. Gres from 1962.  I love the idea of a hat instead of a bridal headpiece.  Do you?

Weekend Eye Candy - Mme Gres, 1966

Photo by Dominique Laporte for L'Officiel
Mme. Gres presented this daring bare midriff gown for Spring 1966 in a wonderful and wild printed silk.  Those triangular cut-outs are strategically placed to show off the curve at your waistline.  Love the dress, but the addition of the yellow drape is an unfortunate choice, in my opinion.  I think the dress would stand perfectly on it's own.

Weekend Eye Candy - Mme Gres, 1957

Need a little something to knock 'em dead on New Year's Eve?  How about this silk satin evening gown with matching hooded cloak by Mme. Gres from 1957?  In my dreams!

1953 Couture

I was doing some research about a couture garment recently and was struck by the popularity of stripes for the spring of 1953.  Mme. Grés seemed especially fond of striped silk for that season.  Which is your favorite?
