Guess the Date, Guess the Designer

I won't make you guess that this is a dress.  I have no idea where her arms are or where they are supposed to be.  I have no idea if this is the true shape of the dress or if it has been "puffed" up with air or stuffing for the photo.  Yes, it's a bit whacky, but can you guess the date?  How about the designer?  Answer tomorrow!

Where do you think her arms are supposed to go?

Those earrings make me think 1980s....but then again, being black and white perhaps it's 1960s... what a mystery!

I think it looks more like a cape, and her arms would go inside it. I guess Balenciaga, 1963.

Hmmm, the dress's length and shape and the toque hat style make me think 1957-58, maybe even '59, but the shoes look earlier; the heels aren't yet needle thin like most shoes were in the late 50s and the toes are almost bluntly rounded, unlike the architectural winklepickers everywhere in the late fifties. The makeup is pure 1950s, but the lipstick isn't yet as pale as some late fifties lipstick was, so that also confuses me, but prominent, darker lipstick was still common at the time, the paler stuff more high, high fashion. The abstract flower print of the dress also looks more late fifties than earlier fifties.

So I'll say 1957-58, since I think it's more likely that you'd present a "60s or 50s?" conundrum than a "late 50s or early 50s?" conundrum.
