1961 Little Girl's Dresses

It wasn't easy being a little girl in 1961.

Pants and shorts were OK for outdoor play, but otherwise? We always had to wear a dress. We wore dresses to school, to parties, and for shopping.

Sometimes we had to wear stupid pinafores over our dresses. And then there were the scratchy crinoline slips that made us fidget.

And don't forget the Mary Jane shoes with anklet socks that always fell down and had to be pulled up over and over. Or, even worse, the tights that wouldn't stay up.

No, it wasn't easy being a little girl in 1961.

Thank you for saying that! It wasn't easy being a girl in 1961. Well, I was born in 1963, but even when I went to first grade in 1969, I was sent home from school because I was wearing a sweet little pants suit my mom had made. They made me come back in a dress.

Those weren't the days.

I was a little girl in 1961, and, no it was not easy. The worst of it was the crinoline - they scratched like crazy! Thank goodness my mother gave up on them when I was about 3. There is a photo of my best friend and me in church, circa 1961. She has on a full dress and crinoline, and the dress is hiked up around her waist and her little hand is scratching her thigh!
